Three decisions, and why.

Modernise for flexibility as much as for cost.
The measurements showed a modest saving. The real value was elsewhere: deploying and scaling each service on its own.
Start with the least risky change.
The smallest, most isolated piece: the best place to learn before touching the rest.
Let nothing out to the internet without control.
All outbound traffic goes through a single, filtered point.
